A simple conversation can change someone’s day. For Kate Barry and Elise Conkel, that’s been an important takeaway from their time as social work interns at Care Resources PACE.
Assigned to Care Resources through their universities – Grand Valley State and Cornerstone, respectively – both students entered the experience eager to explore medical social work in a hands-on, interdisciplinary setting. What they found was a collaborative environment where social workers partner with a variety of clinicians and other specialists to support each participant’s well-being.
Throughout two semesters, Barry and Conkel have contributed in meaningful, everyday ways. They have supported care planning, assisted with assessments and helped participants navigate everything from housing applications to technology challenges. They also led educational “Wellness and You” presentations on topics such as scam prevention and healthy relationships. Just as important, they spent time building trust.
“I learned the impact I can make on an individual’s day just by sitting down and having a 25-minute conversation,” Barry shared. “The fact that we’re taking the time to really listen has meant a lot to participants. The fact that I’ve become a trusted person they’re so comfortable talking to is a good feeling.”
Those simple moments of connection have reinforced lessons from the classroom. Barry found immediate use of new interviewing skills she learned in one of her social work courses. It’s been a similar experience for Conkel.
“I’ve gotten to see how a client relationship grows and the time it takes to build rapport,” Conkel said. “We talk a lot in class about individual therapy and the importance of being warm and genuine. We’ve been able to put that into practice through supportive visits with participants.”
Guided by a welcoming team and strong mentorship, both students have gained confidence and practical skills they will carry forward. More than anything, they leave with a deeper understanding that meaningful care often starts with something simple: being present.
We thank them for all their time and dedication and wish them well as they complete their undergrad programs and go on to pursue their master’s degrees.
