Care Resources PACE partnered with Bunnies-R-Us Rescue to bring rabbits into the Grand Rapids day center for participants to pet and hold as part of the nonprofit’s programming focused on mental health.
Care Resources knows mental and emotional wellness are particularly important for older adults, who face a higher risk of mental health problems, such as anxiety and depression. Rabbits are known for their calming presence and gentle nature, making them excellent at lowering stress levels and improving emotional well-being.
“We’ve seen bunnies provide great emotional regulation and comfort,” said Megan Bollo, a recreational therapist. “While they are at our day center, our participants love to cuddle the bunnies and reminisce about pets they have loved. The experience not only brings participants a lot of joy, but it also visibly relaxes them.”
